- INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Chekpros.
This Refund and Returns Policy (“Refund Policy” or “Policy”) explains the circumstances under which clients, employers, freelancers, service providers, and other users of Chekpros (“User,” “you,” or “your”) may request, receive, or be required to provide a refund, cancellation, replacement, revision, return, or other form of financial or service-related remedy.
Chekpros is a technology-enabled marketplace that connects clients and businesses with independent professionals, freelancers, service providers, and other talent. Because services offered through Chekpros may be digital, professional, creative, technical, consulting, physical, or otherwise customized, traditional product-return rules may not apply to every transaction.
Accordingly, refunds and cancellations are assessed according to the nature of the transaction, the applicable project or service terms, the stage of performance, the quality and completeness of the work, the parties’ communications, applicable marketplace protections, and applicable law.
Chekpros is committed to maintaining a fair, transparent, and commercially reasonable refund process while protecting both clients and freelancers from abuse, fraud, bad-faith claims, and unjustified financial losses.
Where applicable law provides a consumer with rights that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted by contract, those rights will prevail over any conflicting provision of this Policy.
- Scope of this Policy
This Policy applies to transactions conducted through Chekpros, including but not limited to:
- Freelance projects;
- Fixed-price projects;
- Milestone-based projects;
- Hourly or time-based services;
- Professional services;
- Consulting services;
- Creative services;
- Design and development services;
- Writing and content services;
- Marketing and advertising services;
- Technical services;
- Business services;
- Digital deliverables;
- Physical or locally delivered services where supported;
- Service packages;
- Custom orders;
- Other services purchased through Chekpros.
This Policy may also apply to payments held, processed, or facilitated through Chekpros, including payments associated with escrow, wallet balances, milestones, project deposits, or other transaction structures.
Individual service listings, project agreements, proposals, milestones, contracts, or written arrangements between Users may contain additional refund or cancellation terms. Such terms must comply with applicable law and Chekpros policies.
- Chekpros as a Marketplace
Unless expressly stated otherwise, Chekpros operates as a marketplace and technology platform connecting independent service providers with clients.
Freelancers and service providers are generally independent contractors responsible for delivering the services they offer.
Chekpros does not automatically become the provider, manufacturer, employer, or direct seller of every service listed by a third-party User.
However, Chekpros may provide payment processing, transaction management, escrow or payment-holding functionality, dispute resolution, fraud prevention, platform protections, customer support, and other marketplace services.
Accordingly, Chekpros may intervene in a transaction where necessary to:
- Protect Users;
- Investigate complaints;
- Prevent fraud;
- Resolve disputes;
- Determine whether a refund is appropriate;
- Protect funds;
- Enforce platform rules;
- Comply with applicable law;
- Respond to payment-provider requirements;
- Address misconduct or abuse.
- General Refund Principle
Chekpros does not operate under a blanket “all sales are final” policy.
A refund may be available where:
- A freelancer fails to provide the agreed service;
- A freelancer materially fails to meet the agreed project requirements;
- The delivered work is substantially incomplete;
- The freelancer abandons the project;
- The freelancer materially misrepresents the service or deliverables;
- The service materially differs from what was agreed;
- A transaction was unauthorized or fraudulent;
- A project is cancelled before substantial performance;
- A payment was made in error and applicable conditions support a refund;
- A dispute is resolved in favor of the client;
- A payment is duplicated;
- Chekpros determines that a refund is appropriate under its marketplace protections;
- Applicable law requires a refund or other remedy.
A refund is not automatically guaranteed merely because a client changes their mind after work has commenced.
- Client Cancellation Before Work Begins
A client may request cancellation of a project before the freelancer has materially commenced work.
Where the freelancer has not begun substantial performance, Chekpros may approve a full or partial refund depending on:
- The project terms;
- Whether the freelancer incurred legitimate costs;
- Whether any work has already been completed;
- Whether third-party services have already been purchased;
- Whether the transaction was subject to a milestone or cancellation condition;
- Applicable payment-processing requirements;
- Applicable law.
Where no work has commenced and no legitimate non-refundable costs have been incurred, a full refund will generally be considered.
- Client Cancellation after Work Has Started
Once a freelancer has commenced work, a refund is not automatically available simply because the client changes their mind.
Chekpros may consider a partial refund, cancellation, or other remedy based on the amount of work completed and the circumstances of the cancellation.
Factors may include:
- Work already delivered;
- Percentage of the project completed;
- Time reasonably spent;
- Milestones completed;
- Materials or resources purchased;
- Whether the freelancer followed the agreed specifications;
- Whether the client changed the original requirements;
- Whether delays or problems were caused by the client;
- Whether the freelancer breached the project agreement.
Chekpros may determine that the freelancer is entitled to payment for properly completed work even where the remaining portion of the project is cancelled.
- Refunds for Failure to Deliver
A client may request a refund where a freelancer:
- Does not deliver the agreed work;
- Stops responding without reasonable explanation;
- Abandons the project;
- Fails to deliver within the agreed timeframe without an acceptable reason;
- Delivers work that is materially incomplete;
- Refuses to complete agreed deliverables;
- Provides substantially different work from the agreed scope.
Where the evidence supports the client’s claim, Chekpros may issue a full or partial refund.
Where the freelancer has completed a substantial portion of the agreed work, Chekpros may instead determine that a partial refund or partial payment is appropriate.
- Refunds for Poor-Quality or Non-Conforming Services
A client may request a remedy where the delivered service materially fails to conform to the agreed requirements.
Examples may include:
- A website that does not contain agreed functionality;
- A design that materially differs from approved specifications;
- Content that fails to meet agreed requirements;
- Software that does not substantially perform the agreed functions;
- Consulting work that materially fails to address the agreed scope;
- Deliverables that are materially incomplete;
- Services that contain significant defects that the freelancer has failed to reasonably correct.
Minor differences in style, personal preference, subjective opinion, or creative interpretation do not automatically constitute grounds for a refund.
Where reasonably possible, Chekpros may encourage the freelancer to correct, revise, or complete the work before determining whether a refund is appropriate.
- Revisions and Corrections
Where a project agreement includes revisions, the client should provide clear and reasonable feedback within the applicable project period.
A freelancer should reasonably correct material errors or omissions that are inconsistent with the agreed scope.
However, clients may not use unlimited revision requests to substantially expand the original project beyond the agreed scope.
Where a client requests additional work that was not included in the original agreement, the freelancer may require a new agreement, milestone, or additional payment.
- Project Scope Changes
A refund may be denied or reduced where the alleged problem results primarily from the client changing the original requirements after work has begun.
Examples include:
- Changing the project brief;
- Adding new features;
- Changing approved designs;
- Changing the target audience;
- Changing technical specifications;
- Requesting additional deliverables;
- Providing incomplete or inaccurate information;
- Failing to provide required materials;
- Repeatedly changing instructions.
Where the scope changes materially, the parties should document the revised requirements and agree on any additional time or compensation through Chekpros where possible.
- Milestone-Based Projects
For milestone projects, each milestone may be treated as a separate stage of performance.
Where a milestone has been completed and accepted, the associated payment may generally become payable to the freelancer subject to applicable Chekpros procedures and dispute rights.
If a dispute concerns only a particular milestone, Chekpros may limit the refund or adjustment to the amount reasonably associated with that milestone.
Completed and undisputed milestones will not ordinarily be refunded merely because a later milestone becomes disputed.
- Escrow and Funds Held By Chekpros
Where Chekpros provides an escrow, wallet, payment-holding, or similar transaction mechanism, funds may be held pending completion, milestone approval, dispute resolution, or other applicable conditions.
Holding funds does not automatically mean that a client is entitled to a refund.
Funds may be released, refunded, partially refunded, or otherwise allocated based on:
- The project agreement;
- Milestone status;
- Evidence submitted by the parties;
- Communications between the parties;
- Delivery status;
- Acceptance or approval;
- Applicable Chekpros policies;
- Fraud or security findings;
- Applicable law.
Chekpros may temporarily place a hold on funds while investigating a complaint, payment issue, suspected fraud, or dispute.
- Disputes Involving Refunds
Where the parties cannot resolve a refund issue themselves, either party may initiate a dispute through the procedures provided by Chekpros.
Users should provide relevant evidence, which may include:
- Project descriptions;
- Proposals;
- Contracts;
- Messages;
- Milestone information;
- Delivery records;
- Files;
- Screenshots;
- Invoices;
- Payment records;
- Communications;
- Evidence of revisions;
- Evidence of acceptance or rejection;
- Other information reasonably relevant to the dispute.
Chekpros may review available information and make a determination based on the evidence reasonably available to it.
Chekpros may request additional information from either party.
Failure to provide requested information within a reasonable period may affect the outcome of a dispute.
- Refund Decisions
Depending on the circumstances, Chekpros may determine that:
- The client receives a full refund;
- The client receives a partial refund;
- The freelancer receives full payment;
- The freelancer receives partial payment;
- The freelancer must provide revisions or corrections;
- The transaction is cancelled without further payment;
- Funds are divided between the parties;
- The transaction remains unchanged;
- Another commercially reasonable remedy is appropriate.
Chekpros may consider the actual value of work performed rather than relying solely on the original transaction amount.
Refund decisions may also take into consideration the conduct of both parties.
- Refunds for Fraudulent or Unauthorized Transactions
Users should immediately notify Chekpros if they believe a transaction was:
- Unauthorized;
- Fraudulent;
- Made using a compromised account;
- Made using stolen payment information;
- Associated with identity theft;
- The result of account takeover;
- Connected to suspicious activity.
Chekpros may investigate the transaction and take appropriate action, including:
- Suspending accounts;
- Holding funds;
- Cancelling transactions;
- Reversing transactions where appropriate;
- Refunding eligible payments;
- Cooperating with payment processors;
- Cooperating with financial institutions;
- Reporting suspected criminal activity where appropriate.
A refund will not be issued solely because a User claims a transaction was unauthorized without reasonable investigation.
- Chargebacks and Payment Reversals
Users should contact Chekpros before initiating a payment dispute or chargeback whenever reasonably possible.
A chargeback initiated through a bank, card network, payment processor, or other financial institution may result in:
- A temporary account restriction;
- Suspension of related transactions;
- Investigation;
- Recovery of amounts improperly reversed;
- Additional evidence requests;
- Restrictions on future platform activity.
Chekpros reserves the right to respond to payment disputes and provide transaction records or other relevant information to the applicable financial institution or payment processor.
Nothing in this Policy prevents a User from exercising any rights available under applicable law or applicable payment-network rules.
- Payment Processing Fees
Where a refund is approved, Chekpros will determine whether applicable platform fees, payment-processing charges, transaction charges, currency conversion costs, bank charges, or other third-party charges are refundable based on the circumstances and applicable law.
Where a third-party payment processor, bank, card network, financial institution, or currency provider has already charged a non-refundable fee, Chekpros may be unable to recover that amount.
Chekpros may therefore deduct or exclude such non-recoverable third-party charges from a refund where permitted by law and where the applicable fee was properly disclosed.
However, Chekpros will not use fees or deductions to unlawfully prevent a consumer from receiving a refund that is legally required.
- Currency Conversion and International Refunds
Chekpros may support transactions in different currencies.
Where a refund is processed in a different currency from the original payment, the amount received by the User may differ from the original amount because of:
- Exchange-rate fluctuations;
- Currency conversion charges;
- Bank charges;
- Payment processor fees;
- International transaction fees;
- Correspondent banking charges;
- Other financial institution charges.
Chekpros is not responsible for losses caused solely by currency exchange-rate fluctuations occurring between the original payment and the refund, except where otherwise required by applicable law.
- Digital Products and Digital Deliverables
Because many services on Chekpros involve digital work, digital files, intellectual property, or electronically delivered services, a traditional physical “return” may not be possible.
Examples include:
- Software;
- Source code;
- Graphic designs;
- Websites;
- Digital documents;
- Videos;
- Audio;
- Marketing materials;
- Consulting reports;
- Digital artwork;
- Online courses or training;
- Digital strategy documents.
Once a digital deliverable has been provided, the client may not automatically receive a refund merely because the client has downloaded, accessed, used, published, modified, or otherwise benefited from the deliverable.
Refund eligibility will depend on the project terms, delivery status, quality, conformity with the agreement, dispute circumstances, and applicable law.
- Physical Goods or Physically Delivered Services
Where Chekpros permits a transaction involving physical goods or physical delivery, any return should comply with:
- The applicable service or project agreement;
- The seller or service provider’s disclosed return conditions;
- Applicable Chekpros policies;
- Applicable consumer-protection law.
Where a physical product is defective, materially misrepresented, damaged, or substantially different from what was agreed, the client may be entitled to repair, replacement, refund, or another legally applicable remedy.
Return shipping responsibilities may depend on the reason for the return and applicable law.
- Non-Refundable or Limited-Refund Circumstances
Subject to applicable law, refunds may be denied or limited where:
- The freelancer fully delivered the agreed service;
- The client approved or accepted the work;
- The client materially used the completed deliverable;
- The complaint is based solely on subjective preference;
- The client changed their mind after substantial work was completed;
- The client failed to provide required information or materials;
- The client repeatedly changed the project requirements;
- The client requested work outside the original scope;
- The client failed to communicate for an unreasonable period;
- The client falsely represented the circumstances of the transaction;
- The client violated Chekpros policies;
- The transaction involved fraud or abuse;
- The client attempted to obtain both the deliverable and a refund without legitimate grounds;
- The requested refund is inconsistent with the agreed project terms and applicable law.
This section does not limit any mandatory rights or remedies available to consumers under applicable law.
- Abuse of the Refund System
Chekpros prohibits fraudulent, deceptive, or abusive refund practices.
Examples of prohibited conduct include:
- Making false refund claims;
- Falsely claiming that work was not delivered;
- Intentionally withholding payment after receiving satisfactory work;
- Downloading or using deliverables and then falsely claiming non-delivery;
- Repeatedly requesting refunds without legitimate grounds;
- Creating multiple accounts to obtain refunds;
- Coordinating fraudulent disputes;
- Manipulating evidence;
- Making unauthorized chargebacks;
- Misrepresenting project communications;
- Attempting to obtain free work through dishonest refund claims.
Chekpros may suspend or terminate accounts involved in refund abuse.
Where appropriate, Chekpros may also restrict future transactions, withhold funds, recover amounts improperly obtained, or refer suspected fraud to appropriate authorities or financial institutions.
- Freelancer Responsibilities
Freelancers are expected to:
- Clearly describe their services;
- Accurately represent their qualifications;
- Clearly define deliverables;
- Agree on realistic timelines;
- Communicate professionally;
- Deliver work consistent with the agreed scope;
- Address legitimate defects or omissions;
- Avoid misleading claims;
- Maintain records of project communications;
- Cooperate with reasonable refund or dispute investigations.
A freelancer who repeatedly fails to deliver agreed services may be subject to refunds, account restrictions, suspension, or other enforcement measures.
- Client Responsibilities
Clients are expected to:
- Provide accurate project requirements;
- Provide necessary materials and information;
- Respond reasonably to freelancer communications;
- Review deliverables promptly;
- Provide specific and reasonable feedback;
- Avoid unreasonable or constantly changing demands;
- Make payments when due;
- Use Chekpros dispute and refund procedures honestly;
- Preserve relevant project records.
Clients should not use the refund system to obtain free services, intellectual property, source files, or other deliverables to which they are not entitled.
- Refund Request Timeframe
Users should submit refund or cancellation requests as soon as reasonably possible after discovering the issue.
Unless a different timeframe applies under applicable law, the project agreement, or a specific Chekpros protection program, Chekpros may require a refund request to be submitted within a reasonable period after:
- The expected delivery date;
- Delivery of the disputed work;
- Discovery of the alleged defect;
- Project cancellation;
- The transaction date; or
- The event giving rise to the complaint.
Delays in submitting a complaint may make it more difficult to investigate the matter and may affect the available remedy.
Mandatory statutory rights are not affected by this provision.
- How to Request a Refund
To request a refund, Users should use the applicable refund, dispute, support, or transaction-management functionality available through Chekpros.
A refund request should include:
- Order or project ID;
- Date of transaction;
- Amount paid;
- Reason for the refund;
- Description of the issue;
- Relevant communications;
- Evidence supporting the claim;
- Requested resolution.
Chekpros may request additional documentation where reasonably necessary.
Users should not submit false, misleading, manipulated, or incomplete evidence.
- Refund Review Process
After receiving a refund request, Chekpros may:
- Confirm the transaction;
- Review the applicable project terms;
- Review communications between the parties;
- Review delivery and milestone records;
- Request information from either party;
- Review payment records;
- Investigate potential fraud;
- Determine whether the service was properly delivered;
- Determine the appropriate remedy;
- Communicate the outcome to the affected parties.
The complexity of the transaction may affect the time required to complete a review.
Chekpros may prioritize urgent cases involving suspected fraud, unauthorized transactions, account compromise, or significant consumer-protection concerns.
- Refund Method
Where a refund is approved, Chekpros will generally attempt to return funds using the original payment method where reasonably possible.
Depending on the payment method, processor, currency, banking arrangements, or regulatory requirements, Chekpros may use another appropriate refund method.
The timing of the refund reaching the User’s account may depend on the payment processor, bank, card network, or financial institution.
Chekpros cannot guarantee the exact date on which a third-party financial institution will credit a refunded amount.
- Partial Refunds
Chekpros may issue partial refunds where:
- Part of the service was properly delivered;
- Some milestones were completed;
- Some deliverables were accepted;
- The freelancer performed a measurable portion of the agreed work;
- A defect affects only part of the project;
- The parties mutually agree to a partial refund;
- A partial remedy is considered fair based on the circumstances.
The amount of a partial refund may be determined based on the value of work properly completed and the extent of the failure.
- Refunds Arising from Chekpros Action
In certain circumstances, Chekpros may cancel a transaction, restrict an account, remove a listing, or intervene in a project because of:
- Fraud;
- Policy violations;
- Security concerns;
- Legal requirements;
- Sanctions concerns;
- Payment-provider restrictions;
- Platform abuse;
- Misrepresentation;
- Prohibited activity.
Where Chekpros cancels a transaction, the financial outcome will be determined according to the circumstances, applicable Chekpros policies, payment-provider requirements, and applicable law.
- Service Provider Failure
If a freelancer or service provider becomes unable or unwilling to complete an accepted project, Chekpros may, depending on the circumstances:
- Allow additional time;
- Facilitate reassignment;
- Permit cancellation;
- Provide a partial refund;
- Provide a full refund;
- Release payment for properly completed work;
- Assist the client in finding another service provider.
The appropriate remedy will depend on the amount and quality of work already performed and the circumstances surrounding the failure.
- Client Failure to Cooperate
Chekpros may deny or reduce a refund where the freelancer demonstrates that the inability to complete the service resulted primarily from the client’s failure to:
- Provide required information;
- Provide access;
- Approve materials;
- Respond to reasonable requests;
- Make required payments;
- Provide necessary files;
- Meet agreed responsibilities.
Chekpros may consider the totality of the circumstances before reaching a decision.
- Acceptance of Deliverables
Where a client explicitly approves, accepts, or confirms a deliverable, that acceptance may be considered when determining a later refund request.
However, acceptance does not necessarily eliminate a User’s rights where:
- A material defect was concealed;
- The deliverable was materially misrepresented;
- Fraud occurred;
- The defect could not reasonably have been discovered at acceptance;
- Applicable law provides otherwise.
- Intellectual Property and Refunds
A refund does not automatically determine ownership of intellectual property.
Ownership, licensing, usage rights, source files, copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual-property rights are governed by the applicable project agreement and Chekpros policies.
Where a client receives a refund for work that has not been accepted or paid for, the client may not automatically acquire ownership or usage rights in the freelancer’s work unless otherwise agreed or required by law.
Similarly, where a freelancer has been paid for an accepted deliverable, a subsequent refund dispute does not automatically transfer or revoke intellectual-property rights.
- Taxes, Duties and Government Charges
Where a refund involves taxes, duties, withholding amounts, government charges, or other mandatory deductions, Chekpros may process the refund in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
Certain taxes or government charges may not be recoverable.
Users are responsible for complying with their own tax obligations arising from transactions conducted through Chekpros.
- Third-Party Services
Some Chekpros transactions may involve third-party services, subscriptions, software, hosting, advertising platforms, payment providers, shipping providers, or other external services.
Where a freelancer has legitimately purchased or used a third-party service specifically for a client’s project, the refund treatment may depend on whether the third-party amount is refundable.
Chekpros is not responsible for non-refundable third-party charges that were properly incurred in connection with an agreed project, except where applicable law provides otherwise.
- Fraud, Money Laundering and Financial Crime
Chekpros may delay, restrict, reverse, or refuse a refund where necessary to comply with applicable anti-fraud, anti-money laundering, sanctions, payment-provider, financial-crime, or legal requirements.
A refund may be subject to identity verification or additional documentation.
Chekpros may cooperate with banks, payment processors, regulators, law-enforcement authorities, or other authorized entities where legally required or reasonably necessary to address suspected financial crime.
- Complaints and Escalation
If a User is dissatisfied with a refund decision, the User may request a review through Chekpros support or the applicable dispute-resolution process.
The request should explain:
- The original decision;
- Why the User believes the decision was incorrect;
- Any additional evidence;
- The remedy requested.
Chekpros may conduct an internal review where appropriate.
Users may also retain any rights to seek remedies through applicable regulatory, judicial, arbitration, or other lawful mechanisms.
For consumers in Nigeria, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission provides complaint and redress mechanisms for qualifying consumer disputes.
- No Waiver of Legal Rights
Nothing in this Refund and Returns Policy is intended to:
- Remove rights that cannot legally be excluded;
- Prevent a consumer from exercising a statutory right;
- Exclude remedies required by applicable law;
- Permit unfair or deceptive practices;
- Prevent a User from making a lawful complaint to a competent authority.
Where a provision of this Policy conflicts with a mandatory requirement of applicable law, the mandatory legal requirement will prevail.
This approach is particularly important because Nigerian consumer-protection law recognizes rights relating to quality services, cancellation, refunds, fair dealing, and remedies where services fail to meet applicable standards.
- No Automatic Refund Guarantee
Except where required by law or expressly provided under an applicable Chekpros protection program, Chekpros does not guarantee that every cancellation, complaint, or dissatisfaction will result in a refund.
Refund decisions are based on the circumstances of each transaction.
The existence of this Policy does not guarantee a successful refund claim.
- Changes to this Policy
Chekpros may update this Refund and Returns Policy from time to time to reflect:
- Changes in the Chekpros platform;
- New services;
- Changes in payment methods;
- Changes in marketplace operations;
- Changes in applicable law;
- Regulatory developments;
- Fraud and security requirements;
- Improvements to the dispute-resolution process.
The updated version will be published on Chekpros.com with an updated effective date.
Where required by law, Chekpros will provide additional notice of material changes.
- Severability
If any provision of this Policy is determined to be unlawful, invalid, or unenforceable, that provision will be interpreted or modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable where legally permissible.
The remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
- Governing Terms
This Policy should be read together with Chekpros’s:
- Terms & Conditions;
- User Agreement;
- Fees & Charges Policy;
- Dispute Resolution Policy;
- Trust & Safety Policy;
- Freelancer Service Agreement;
- Employer Hiring Policy;
- Privacy Policy;
- Acceptable Use Policy;
- Payment and transaction rules;
- Other applicable marketplace policies.
Where there is a conflict between this Policy and a mandatory legal requirement, the applicable law will prevail.
Where there is a conflict between this Policy and another Chekpros policy, the provision specifically addressing the relevant transaction or issue may apply, subject to applicable law.
- Contact Chekpros
If you have a question regarding a refund, cancellation, return, dispute, payment reversal, or transaction issue, please contact Chekpros through the appropriate support channel available on Chekpros.com.
When contacting Chekpros, include your Order ID, project ID, transaction reference, or other relevant information so that your request can be reviewed efficiently.
Chekpros is committed to handling legitimate refund and consumer complaints fairly, transparently, and in a reasonable timeframe.
Final Statement
Chekpros believes that a strong marketplace is built on trust, transparency, accountability, and fair treatment.
Clients should receive the services they reasonably paid for. Freelancers should receive fair compensation for legitimate work properly completed. Where something goes wrong, Chekpros may facilitate communication, investigate the circumstances, and provide an appropriate remedy consistent with the transaction, applicable Chekpros policies, and applicable law.
By using Chekpros, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Refund and Returns Policy and agree to comply with its applicable provisions.
